HarmonyCa: A Different Approach to Facial Rejuvenation

HarmonyCa: Understanding Collagen Stimulation and Facial Ageing

As we get older, it's natural to notice changes in our face. Our cheeks may not feel quite as full, the jawline can become less defined, and our skin may gradually lose some of its firmness.

These changes don't happen overnight. They're part of the natural ageing process and are influenced by several factors, including genetics, lifestyle, hormonal changes and the gradual loss of collagen.

At BAEY Aesthetics, I believe understanding why these changes happen is just as important as knowing which treatments are available.

One treatment I offer for suitable clients is HarmonyCa, an injectable that combines hyaluronic acid with a collagen-stimulating ingredient.

But what does that actually mean for your skin?

First, Let's Talk About Collagen

Collagen is one of the main proteins responsible for giving our skin structure and strength. Alongside elastin and hyaluronic acid, it helps maintain the skin's firmness, elasticity and overall appearance.

From our mid-20s, collagen production gradually begins to decline. As we age, changes also occur in the fat compartments, muscles and bones that support our facial structure.

This is why facial ageing isn't simply about developing wrinkles.

You might notice that your cheeks appear flatter, your lower face looks slightly heavier or your jawline isn't as defined as it once was.

Something I always consider when assessing a client's face is that volume loss and skin laxity are two different concerns. While they often occur together, they don't necessarily require the same treatment.

Understanding what's contributing to those changes helps me determine which treatments may be appropriate.

What Is HarmonyCa?

HarmonyCa is a hybrid injectable treatment developed by Allergan Aesthetics.

It combines two ingredients that work differently within the skin:

Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in our bodies. In injectable treatments, it can be used to provide volume and structural support.

The hyaluronic acid component of HarmonyCa provides an immediate volumising effect in the treated area.

Calcium Hydroxyapatite (CaHA)

Calcium hydroxyapatite consists of tiny microspheres that encourage the body's natural collagen production.

Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid fillers, which primarily provide volume and support, HarmonyCa also has a collagen-stimulating component.

This means the treatment has both an immediate effect from the hyaluronic acid and a more gradual effect as collagen production develops.

How Does HarmonyCa Stimulate Collagen?

When HarmonyCa is injected into the appropriate tissue, the calcium hydroxyapatite microspheres provide a framework around which the body can produce new collagen.

This process involves fibroblasts, which are cells responsible for producing collagen and other components of our skin's connective tissue.

Over time, this collagen production may help improve skin firmness and provide additional tissue support.

It's important to understand that collagen stimulation doesn't happen instantly.

While the hyaluronic acid component provides an immediate volumising effect, the biological response to calcium hydroxyapatite develops gradually over the following weeks and months.

The amount of collagen produced and the visible changes will vary between individuals.

Who Might Benefit From HarmonyCa?

HarmonyCa may be considered for people who are beginning to notice changes in facial firmness, volume or definition.

Common concerns include reduced support through the cheeks, changes in lower-face contours and a gradual loss of skin firmness.

However, not everyone experiencing these changes will benefit from the same treatment.

When I assess a client, I'm not just looking at the area they're concerned about. I'm looking at the face as a whole.

For example, someone may come in concerned about their jawline, but changes in the midface can also influence the appearance of the lower face.

It's important to understand the underlying anatomy rather than simply treating the area where a change is most noticeable.

Sometimes dermal filler may be appropriate. Other times, a collagen-stimulating treatment or a different approach to skin quality may be worth considering.

And sometimes, no injectable treatment is needed at all.

My role is to help you understand your options and make an informed decision about what is suitable for you.

HarmonyCa vs Traditional Dermal Filler

Although HarmonyCa contains hyaluronic acid, it isn't quite the same as a traditional HA dermal filler.

Traditional dermal fillers are generally used to replace volume, provide support or enhance facial contours.

HarmonyCa provides volume and support through its hyaluronic acid component, while the calcium hydroxyapatite encourages collagen production over time.

Neither treatment is necessarily better.

The decision depends on several factors, including your facial anatomy, the degree of volume loss, skin quality and the outcome you're hoping to achieve.

Another important difference is that the calcium hydroxyapatite component cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase in the same way as a traditional hyaluronic acid filler.

This is one of the reasons why careful patient selection, product placement and an understanding of facial anatomy are particularly important.

How Long Does HarmonyCa Last?

The effects of HarmonyCa may last approximately 12–18 months, although this varies between individuals.

The hyaluronic acid component provides an initial volumising effect, while collagen stimulation develops more gradually.

Several factors can influence how long the effects remain noticeable, including your metabolism, skin condition, treatment area and individual response.

It's also worth remembering that injectable treatments don't stop the natural ageing process.

Our skin and facial structures continue to change over time, which is why I prefer to look at facial rejuvenation as an ongoing, individualised approach rather than a one-off treatment.

What Can You Expect After Treatment?

As with other injectable treatments, you may experience some swelling, tenderness, redness or bruising around the injection sites.

These effects are generally temporary, although recovery varies.

HarmonyCa also carries less common but potentially serious risks, including infection, inflammatory reactions, nodules and vascular complications. Rare vascular complications can lead to tissue damage or visual impairment, including blindness.

Before any treatment, we'll discuss the potential risks, expected recovery and aftercare requirements.

I believe it's important that clients understand not only what a treatment may achieve, but also its limitations and possible complications.

My Approach to HarmonyCa at BAEY Aesthetics

One of the things I enjoy most about cosmetic nursing is helping clients understand their skin and the changes that happen as we age.

I don't believe every line needs to be treated or that facial ageing is something we need to fight.

For me, facial rejuvenation is about understanding what's changing and considering whether a treatment can provide appropriate support while maintaining your natural features.

With HarmonyCa, I'm particularly interested in the combination of structural support and collagen stimulation.

However, it's not a treatment I would recommend simply because someone wants firmer skin or a more defined jawline.

Every face is different, and the treatment needs to be appropriate for the individual's anatomy, concerns and medical history.

At BAEY, I take a personalised approach to consultations. We'll discuss what you've noticed, what you'd like to address and which treatments may be suitable.

My priority is always to provide safe, considered care and help you feel informed and comfortable with your decisions.
